Posted on April 2nd, 2012

We have learned with sadness that one of our Founder members, Raymond Woolford, passed away on Friday 30th March. His funeral service will take place at St Andrews Church, St Andrews Road, Epsom, Auckland at 11.00am on Wednesday 4th April, at which Ken Young will represent the Society.

Ray was 88 years old, and during WW2 served in the Pacific with the RNZAF.  Post-War he qualified as an Architect and set up a successful Practice in Whangarei. He joined the Territorial Force and served in the RNZ Engineers with 31 Field Coy., 1 Field Sqn. and 1 Battn. Nthld. Reg. He was commissioned and attained the rank of Captain, and was a very active member of the Sappers’ Association.?He became a member of The Officers’ Club in 1960 and was its President in 1994/95.

His keen interest in aviation lead him to qualify as a private pilot. For many years he was the NZ representative on the World Air Sports Federation. On his Passchendaele membership application form, he stated that that his father and two uncles had in fact been in France at the time and thus fortuitously just missed the battle.

The Society extends it’s condolences to Ray’s family.
